The Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin exhibits an extensive collection of paintings and sculptures dating from the 18th century and 19th century from acroos Europe. A valuable part of the collection is represented by French Impressionist paintings, acquired in the early 20th century, when the museum was established as the German National Gallery but also started expanding to works of art from other countries.
This early portrait by Renoir, En été, was painted in 1868, before the blossoming of the Impressionist movement, but already contains some impressionistic elements, like the roughy skeched out background, with broad brushstrokes. This is a portrait of Lise Tréhot, a young model frequently used by Renoir during this period.
Summer, oil painting by Claude Monet, is d epicting a tranquil countryside scene with a women sitting in a cool shadowy foreground, against a background in the summer heat with wind-blown trees. Most probably painted while spending the summer of 1874 in Argenteuil, along with Renoir and Manet.
Dans la serre – In the Conservatory, oil painting by Edouard Manet, 1879, portraying a couple of friends of the painter, the Guillemets, in an intimate but detached setting. More conservative and less impressionistic than other paintings by Manet of the same period this double portrait should be compared with another painting inspired by the same setting and portraying Manet’s wife, Suzanne.
