Postcards from Budapest

It is only recently that I spent a week in Budapest and I discovered one of the most beautiful cities in Europe, steeped in history and glowing with architectural gems nestled all along the Danube. I was particularly fascinated by the glorious beauty of the Parliament reflecting in the Danube at sunset time.

Even in the freezing cold of the winter, it was a great pleasure to walk along the Danube banks and to admire the inspiring views across the river of what, originally, were two distinct towns, before bridge construction made an organic unit of this urban conglomerate.

Another interesting site was the installation by artist Cantogay representing shoes on the riverbank of the Danube in remembrance of the executions that took place during WW2 in the city and across Europe at that time.

When in Budapest having a traditional goulash for dinner at candlelight is a must and a real delicacy. A special mention has to go to the local For Sale Pub, close by to the Liberty bridge, serving very delicious traditional Hungarian dishes in a characteristic candle-lit ambience, also often with live music.

Paul Street Boys by Molnar was a delightful rediscovery in preparation for my first visit to Budapest. The choice inevitably fell on a book that I had not taken into my hands for forty years. What a thrill to relive the vicissitudes of the two contrasting groups of teenagers, fighting each other for the use of a pitch of land for their afternoon games.
