🇬🇧 Impressionism is associated in our mind with Paris and French painters but in reality the artistic movement at the end of the XIX century involves also painters of various nationalities who came into contact with the main impressionists in Paris. Giuseppe De Nittis, originally from Barletta in Italy, is one of these non-French artists recognised to be part of the main impressionist movement. Originally in contact with the macchiaioli painters in Italy, De Nittis moved to Paris in 1867 where he gained some success with genre paintings commissioned by art dealer Adolphe Goupil. In 1875 he moved to London where this painting, Westminster Bridge, was produced, along with other artworks inspired by cityscapes. Westminster Bridge (1878) is one of Giuseppe De Nittis’s most refined London views — a synthesis of atmospheric Impressionism and acute social observation. It captures the Thames at sunset, the Parliament dissolving into mist. De Nittis paints the end of the day: the sun sinks behind a veil of orange‑violet clouds, turning the Houses of Parliament into a backlit silhouette that seems almost immaterial. The building’s mass “smaterializza” — dissolves into fog and sunset light — an effect critics of the time admired for its truthfulness and delicacy.

The Thames reflects this haze with broad, calm planes of color, giving the scene a suspended, contemplative rhythm. Unlike Monet, who pursued pure optical vibration, De Nittis uses atmosphere to anchor mood and narrative, not just sensation.

Originariamente in contatto con i pittori macchiaioli in Italia, De Nittis si trasferì a Parigi nel 1867 dove ottenne un certo successo con dipinti di genere, commissionati dal commerciante d’arte Adolphe Goupil. Nel 1875 si trasferì a Londra dove fu prodotto questo dipinto, Westminster Bridge, insieme ad altre opere ispirate ai paesaggi urbani. Giuseppe De Nittis, originaire de Barletta en Italie, fait partie de ces artistes non français reconnus comme faisant partie du principal mouvement impressionniste. À l’origine en contact avec les peintres Macchiaioli en Italie, De Nittis s’installe à Paris en 1867 où il obtient un certain succès avec des peintures de genre, commandées par le marchand d’art Adolphe Goupil. En 1875, il s’installe à Londres où cette peinture, Westminster Bridge, est réalisée avec d’autres œuvres inspirées des paysages urbains.
