🇬🇧 Avenue at Chantilly – Cézanne spent several months during the summer of 1888 working in and around Chantilly, about 24 miles north of Paris. This is one of three similar oil paintings from the park surrounding the castle that he produced during his stay. The symmetry and spatial depth of this vision may have attracted him more than his historical associations, as he focused on the boulevard or path through Chantilly forest rather than the town’s famous castle, seen in the distance.

Cézanne created an impression of depth by constructing the landscape as a mosaic of carefully organized splashes of color. Warm ocher and reds contrast with colder blues, greens and grays and the tone variations suggest the play of light on the foliage. Alternating bands of light and shadow lead us inside and darker touches of blue and green define the structure of the trees and fences.

This paining is exhibited at the National Gallery in London, along with other artwork by Cezanne.

🇫🇷 Avenue à Chantilly – Cézanne a passé plusieurs mois au cours de l’été 1888 à travailler dans et autour de Chantilly, à quelque 38 km au nord de Paris. Il s’agit de l’une des trois peintures à l’huile similaires du parc entourant le château qu’il a réalisées pendant son séjour. La symétrie et la profondeur spatiale de ce point de vue l’ont peut-être plus séduite que ses associations historiques, car il s’est concentré sur l’avenue ou le chemin qui traverse la forêt de Chantilly plutôt que sur le célèbre château de la ville, vu au loin.

Cézanne a créé une impression de profondeur en construisant le paysage comme une mosaïque de taches de couleur soigneusement organisées. Les ocres et les rouges chauds contrastent avec les bleus, les verts et les gris plus froids, et les variations de ton suggèrent le jeu de la lumière sur le feuillage. Des bandes alternées de lumière et d’ombre nous entraînent et des touches plus sombres de bleu et de vert définissent la structure des arbres et des clôtures.
