Born in 1774 on the Baltic coast, Caspar David Friedrich became the defining painter of German Romanticism — his solitary wanderers and fog-shrouded mountains turning landscape into a mirror for the soul. Nearly forgotten at his death, later distorted by Nazi propaganda, and finally rehabilitated in the 1970s, Friedrich is now recognized as a founding figure of modern landscape art, admired by artists from Munch to Rothko. Max Liebermann 🎨🖌🖼

Born in Berlin on July 20, 1847, Max Liebermann is widely regarded as the foremost champion of Impressionism in Germany and one of the most significant European painters of his era. He began his career as an enfant terrible of realism before evolving into the most celebrated representative of German Impressionism.  On the 178th anniversary of his birth, we celebrate an artist of extraordinary range: from naturalistic studies of the labour of the poor, to sun-drenched Dutch landscapes, to over two hundred commissioned portraits  — including one of Albert Einstein. As founder and first president of the Berlin Secession, he was instrumental in the development of modernism in Germany, both artistically and institutionally.
