Multatuli, the pen name of Eduard Douwes Dekker (1820–1887), was a pioneering Dutch writer best known for his groundbreaking novel Max Havelaar (1860). Drawing from his experience as a colonial administrator in the Dutch East Indies, Multatuli exposed the injustices and corruption of Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia. His bold, satirical style and passionate advocacy for human rights marked a turning point in Dutch literature, blending personal narrative, political critique, and experimental form.
