Circles in a Circle (1923) stands as one of the pinnacle achievements of Wassily Kandinsky’s lyrical abstraction. Painted during his Bauhaus years, the work reveals a dialectical tension between containment and freedom: the large perimeter circle acts as a cosmic field within which chromatic spheres of varying size orbit, graze, and converse without ever dissolving into mere harmony. Kandinsky does not compose — he geometricizes emotion, translating into pure form the theory of color and inner sound he had elaborated in Concerning the Spiritual in Art. A critical reading of the work uncovers the deep intentionality behind every chromatic choice, and how geometry, far from being cold or cerebral, becomes in Kandinsky’s hands an instrument of spiritual resonance.
