Born in Berlin on July 20, 1847, Max Liebermann is widely regarded as the foremost champion of Impressionism in Germany and one of the most significant European painters of his era. He began his career as an enfant terrible of realism before evolving into the most celebrated representative of German Impressionism.  On the 178th anniversary of his birth, we celebrate an artist of extraordinary range: from naturalistic studies of the labour of the poor, to sun-drenched Dutch landscapes, to over two hundred commissioned portraits  — including one of Albert Einstein. As founder and first president of the Berlin Secession, he was instrumental in the development of modernism in Germany, both artistically and institutionally.
