A prestigious opera house for the new Italian capital

The Teatro dell’Opera in Rome is considered one of the most prestigious opera houses in the world, although its history goes back only to just more than 140 years ago. It was originally built in a couple of years, starting in 1878, as Teatro Costanzi, from the name of its owner, and it underwent several renovations to become an attractive venue for the demanding public of the new capital of the Kingdom of Italy. The Teatro dell’Opera quickly became a popular destination for opera lovers when it opened its doors to the public in 1880. The opening performance was an opera by Rossini, Semiramide, which took place in the presence of the King and Queen of Italy. The theatre is located along the now central Via Nazionale, an area re-urbanised in the period that followed the establishment of the capital of the new kingdom in Rome.

Since its opening this opera house has attracted many composers to stage their new compositions which have become permanent successes all over the world. The composers associated with this opera house have contributed significantly to its reputation as a top destination for music lovers. Famous composers such as Verdi contributed their talents to making this opera house a renowned success. Italian composers Verdi and Puccini also contributed their talents by writing operas specifically for this venue. As an example, the first performance of a Tosca, by Puccini, was staged in this theatre in January 1900 and it has since become one of the most staged operas in the world. The contributions of celebrated composers and talented singers have earned this venue acclaim as one of Italy’s best venues for performing traditional operas in Europe.

To this day, this reputable Italian opera house still manages to deliver top-notch performances thanks to its skilled performers and state-of-the-art stage technology. It remains one of Italy’s most prestigious destinations for opera and ballet fans alike, with a dense season of world class productions, also performed during the summer at the open air stage at the Terme di Caracalla. As all public venues, also the Teatro dell’Opera has been hit by the crisis triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic and it stopped staging performances for a couple of years. This production was historically reconstructing the first production of the opera, which took stage at the Teatro dell’Opera in January 1900.
