Summer Sunshine, a mature short story collection by Grazia Deledda 🇮🇹🖋️🇺🇸

Grazia Deledda — Nobel Prize laureate, Sardinian storyteller, and one of the most underread voices in world literature — wrote her short story collection Sole d’estate (Summer Sunshine) in 1933, composing its twenty-five stories while living with a cancer she knew would be fatal. The result is one of the most quietly extraordinary works of Italian modernism: a collection in which landscape and mortality, folklore and stoic endurance, are held in a prose of deceptive simplicity and genuine depth.

Summer Sunshine has never been translated into English — until now. This Blue Phoenix Editions ebook presents the first complete English translation of the collection, curated and translated by Enzo Martinelli, together with critical essays exploring Deledda’s place in the Italian short story tradition, her late-period stoic vision, her relationship to the verismo of Verga and the existential irony of Pirandello, and the structural reasons why her short fiction has remained invisible to Anglophone readers for nearly a century. The volume is complemented by AI-generated imagery responding to the visual world of the stories, and by an essential bibliographical apparatus for readers wishing to explore Deledda’s work further.

For readers of Italian literature, world fiction in translation, and the literature of illness and endurance: this is a collection that has waited long enough.

Pirandello’s Short Stories 🇮🇹🖋️🇺🇸

Luigi Pirandello is celebrated worldwide as a Nobel laureate and theatrical innovator — yet the vast majority of his short story collection, the Novelle per un anno, has never appeared in English. This essay examines how that silence has distorted the anglophone reception of one of European modernism’s most radical writers, which stories have been translated and why, and what a complete critical edition would restore to English-language readers. A new ebook — pairing first English translations of selected stories with original critical essays — begins to address what has been missing for too long.
