Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) stands as one of the most enigmatic and influential poets of the 20th century. A Portuguese literary giant, Pessoa is best known for his creation of heteronyms—fully developed alter egos with distinct biographies, philosophies, and poetic voices. Among them, Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Álvaro de Campos each embody different worldviews, allowing Pessoa to explore multiple facets of modern existence and poetic expression. This radical fragmentation of identity was not a stylistic trick but a profound philosophical and literary choice that anticipated postmodern explorations of the self. Pessoa’s poetry ranges from the mystical to the existential, from classical restraint to ecstatic modernism.
His work, largely unpublished during his lifetime, has since gained worldwide acclaim for its depth, innovation, and introspective power. Today, Pessoa is a touchstone for contemporary poets and thinkers, whose fascination with multiplicity and inner experience mirrors the modern soul he so hauntingly captured.

🇵🇹 Tabacaria, por Alvaro de Campos
Não sou nada.
Nunca serei nada.
Janelas do meu quarto,
Real, impossivelmente real, certa, desconhecidamente certa,
Saio da janela, sento-me numa cadeira.
Sim, verdadeiramente altas e nobres e lúcidas -,
Ainda que não more nela;
Serei sempre o que não nasceu para isso;
Serei sempre só o que tinha qualidades;
E cantou a cantiga do Infinito numa capoeira,
Conquistámos todo o mundo antes de nos levantar da cama;
Mas acordámos e ele é opaco,
Levantámo-nos e ele é alheio,
Saímos de casa e ele é a terra inteira,
Mais o sistema solar e a Via Láctea e o Indefinido.
(Come chocolates, pequena;
Come chocolates!
Come, pequena suja, come!
A caligrafia rápida destes versos,
(Porque é possível fazer a realidade de tudo isso sem fazer nada disso);
Deitei fora a máscara e dormi no vestiário
Ele deixará a tabuleta, e eu deixarei versos.
Semiergo-me enérgico, convencido, humano,
E continuo fumando.
Enquanto o Destino mo conceder, continuarei fumando.
Talvez fosse feliz.)
Visto isto, levanto-me da cadeira.
Acenou-me adeus gritei-lhe Adeus ó Esteves!, e o universo

🏴 Tobacconist, by Alvaro de Campos
I am nothing.
I will never be anything.
I cannot want to be anything.
Apart from that, I have within me all the dreams of the world.
Windows of my room,
Of my room, one of millions in the world that no one knows who it is
(And if they knew who it was, what would they know?),
You look out onto the mystery of a street constantly crossed by people,
A street inaccessible to all thoughts,
Real, impossibly real, certain, unknowingly certain,
With the mystery of things beneath stones and beings,
With death putting dampness on the walls and white hair on men,
With Destiny driving the cart of everything along the road of nothing.
Today I am defeated, as if I knew the truth.
Today I am lucid, as if I were about to die,
And had no more kinship with things
Except a farewell, this house and this side of the street becoming
The row of carriages of a train, and a whistled departure
From inside my head,
And a jolt of my nerves and a creaking of bones on the way.
Today I am perplexed like someone who thought and found and forgot.
Today I am torn between the loyalty I owe
To the tobacconist's across the street, as something real on the outside,
And the feeling that everything is a dream, as something real on the inside.
I have failed at everything.
As I made no plans, perhaps everything was nothing.
The learning they gave me,
I climbed out of the back window of the house,
I went to the countryside with great intentions.
But there I found only grass and trees,
And when there were people, they were just like the others.
I leave the window, sit down on a chair. What should I think about?
What do I know about what I will be, I who do not know what I am?
Be what I think? But I think I am so many things!
And there are so many who think they are the same thing that there cannot be so many!
A genius? At this moment,
A hundred thousand brains conceive geniuses like me in their dreams,
And history will not mark, who knows, even one,
There will be nothing but manure from so many future conquests.
No, I don't believe in myself.
In all the madhouses there are crazy lunatics with so many certainties!
I, who have no certainties, am I more certain or less certain?
No, not even in myself...
In how many attics and non-attics around the world
Are there not geniuses-to-themselves dreaming at this very moment?
How many lofty, noble and lucid aspirations -
Yes, truly lofty, noble and lucid -
And who knows if achievable,
Will never see the light of day or find human ears?
The world is for those born to conquer it
And not for those who dream they can conquer it, even if they are right.
I have dreamed more than Napoleon did.
I have held more humanities to my hypothetical chest than Christ,
I have secretly devised philosophies that no Kant ever wrote.
But I am, and perhaps always will be, the one in the attic,
Even though I do not live there;
I will always be the one who was not born for it;
I will always be only the one who had qualities;
I will always be the one who waited for the door to be opened at the foot of a wall without a door
And sang the song of Infinity in a chicken coop,
And heard the voice of God in a covered well.
Believe in me? No, not in anything.
Let Nature pour over my burning head
Its sun, its rain, the wind that ruffles my hair,
And the rest that comes if it comes, or has to come, or does not come.
Cardiac slaves of the stars,
We conquered the whole world before getting out of bed;
But we woke up and it is opaque,
We got up and it is alien,
We left home and it is the whole earth,
Plus the solar system and the Milky Way and the Indefinite.
(Eat chocolates, little one;
Eat chocolates!
Look, there is no more metaphysics in the world than chocolates.
Look, all religions teach nothing more than confectionery.
Eat, you dirty little girl, eat!
If only I could eat chocolates with the same truth with which you eat!
But I think, and when I remove the silver paper, which is tin foil,
I throw everything on the floor, as I have thrown my life.)
But at least there remains the bitterness of what I will never be,
The rapid calligraphy of these verses,
A broken portico to the Impossible.
But at least I consecrate myself with a tearless contempt,
Noble at least in the broad gesture with which I throw
The dirty clothes that I am, without roll, to the course of things,
And I stay at home without a shirt.
(You, who console, who do not exist and therefore console,
Or Greek goddess, conceived as a statue that were alive,
Or Roman patrician, impossibly noble and nefarious,
Or princess of troubadours, most gracious and colourful,
Or marquise of the eighteenth century, low-cut and distant,
Or famous courtesan from our parents' time,
Or I don't know what modern thing - I can't quite conceive what -
All that, whatever it is, whatever you are, may it inspire!
My heart is an empty bucket.
Like those who invoke spirits invoke spirits, I invoke
Myself and find nothing.
I go to the window and see the street with absolute clarity.
I see the shops, I see the pavements, I see the cars passing by,
I see the living beings dressed in clothes crossing each other,
I see the dogs that also exist,
And all this weighs on me like a sentence of exile,
And all this is foreign, like everything else.)
I lived, studied, loved, and even created,
And today there is no beggar I do not envy just for not being me.
I look at each one's rags and sores and lies,
And I think: perhaps you never lived or studied or loved or grew up
(Because it is possible to make all of that a reality without doing any of it);
Perhaps you merely existed, like a lizard whose tail has been cut off
And which is a tail that falls short of the lizard's wriggling.
I made myself what I didn't know,
And what I could have made of myself, I didn't.
The domino I wore was wrong.
They immediately recognised me for who I wasn't, and I didn't deny it, and I lost myself.
When I wanted to take off the mask,
It was stuck to my face.
When I took it off and looked at myself in the mirror,
I had already aged.
I was drunk, I no longer knew how to wear the costume I hadn't taken off.
I threw away the mask and slept in the dressing room
Like a dog tolerated by management
For being harmless
And I'm going to write this story to prove that I am sublime.
Musical essence of my useless verses,
I wish I could find you as something I did,
And not always stand in front of the tobacconist's across the street,
Treading on the awareness of existing,
Like a rug that a drunk stumbles over
Or a doormat that gypsies stole and was worthless.
But the owner of the tobacconist's came to the door and stood at the door.
I look at him with the discomfort of a badly turned head
And with the discomfort of a misunderstanding soul.
He will die and I will die.
He will leave the sign, and I will leave verses.
At some point the sign will die too, and the verses too.
After a certain time, the street where the sign was will die,
and the language in which the verses were written.
Then the spinning planet where all this took place will die.
On other satellites of other systems, something like people
Will continue to do things like verses and live under things like signs,
Always one thing in front of the other,
Always one thing as useless as the other,
Always the impossible as stupid as the real,
Always the mystery of the bottom as certain as the sleep of mystery on the surface,
Always this or always something else or neither one thing nor the other.
But a man entered the tobacconist's (to buy tobacco?),
And plausible reality suddenly falls upon me.
I rise energetically, convinced, human,
And I intend to write these verses in which I say the opposite.
I light a cigarette as I think about writing them
And savour in the cigarette the liberation of all thoughts.
I follow the smoke like a route of its own,
And enjoy, in a sensitive and competent moment,
The liberation from all speculation
And the awareness that metaphysics is a consequence of being in a bad mood.
Then I lean back in my chair
And continue smoking.
As long as Fate allows me, I will continue smoking.
(If I married my laundress's daughter
I might be happy.)
Seeing this, I get up from my chair. I go to the window.
The man left the tobacconist's (putting change in his trouser pocket?).
Ah, I know him: it's Esteves without metaphysics.
(The owner of the tobacconist's arrived at the door.)
As if by divine instinct, Esteves turned and saw me.
He waved goodbye, I shouted, "Goodbye, Esteves!", and the universe
rebuilt itself without ideal or hope, and the owner of the tobacconist's smiled.

reale, incredibilmente reale, certa, in modo sconosciuto certa,
Ho fallito in tutto.
A cosa dovrei pensare?
Cento mila cervelli si immaginano in sogno geni come me,
No, non credo in me stesso.
No, nemmeno in me stesso...
Ho vissuto, ho studiato, ho amato e ho persino creduto,
(Perché è possibile vivere la realtà di tutto ciò senza fare nulla di tutto ciò);
continuerà a fare cose come versi e a vivere sotto cose come cartelli,
Mi alzo a metà, energico, convinto, umano,
