Fernando Pessoa (1888โ1935) stands as one of the most enigmatic and influential poets of the 20th century. A Portuguese literary giant, Pessoa is best known for his creation of heteronymsโfully developed alter egos with distinct biographies, philosophies, and poetic voices. Among them, Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and รlvaro de Campos each embody different worldviews, allowing Pessoa to explore multiple facets of modern existence and poetic expression. This radical fragmentation of identity was not a stylistic trick but a profound philosophical and literary choice that anticipated postmodern explorations of the self. Pessoaโs poetry ranges from the mystical to the existential, from classical restraint to ecstatic modernism.

His work, largely unpublished during his lifetime, has since gained worldwide acclaim for its depth, innovation, and introspective power. Today, Pessoa is a touchstone for contemporary poets and thinkers, whose fascination with multiplicity and inner experience mirrors the modern soul he so hauntingly captured.
The Great Sphinx of Egypt dreams through this paper... I write - and she appears to me through my transparent hand And in the corner of the paper rise the pyramids...
I write - it disturbs me to see the nib of my pen To be the profile of King Cheops... Suddenly I stop... Everything has gone dark... I fall into an abyss made of time...
I'm buried under the pyramids writing verses in the clear light of this lamp And all of Egypt crushes me from above through the strokes I make with the pen...
I hear the Sphinx laughing inside The sound of my quill running across the paper... A huge hand reaches through me without being able to see it, It sweeps everything into the corner of the ceiling behind me, And on the paper where I write, between it and the pen that writes lies the corpse of King Cheops, looking at me with wide eyes, And between our intersecting gazes runs the Nile And a joy of flag-draped boats drifts by In a fuzzy diagonal Between me and what I think... Funerals of King Cheops in old gold and Me!...
All'improvviso mi fermo...
