Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) stands as one of the most enigmatic and influential poets of the 20th century. A Portuguese literary giant, Pessoa is best known for his creation of heteronyms—fully developed alter egos with distinct biographies, philosophies, and poetic voices. Among them, Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Álvaro de Campos each embody different worldviews, allowing Pessoa to explore multiple facets of modern existence and poetic expression. This radical fragmentation of identity was not a stylistic trick but a profound philosophical and literary choice that anticipated postmodern explorations of the self. Pessoa’s poetry ranges from the mystical to the existential, from classical restraint to ecstatic modernism.
His work, largely unpublished during his lifetime, has since gained worldwide acclaim for its depth, innovation, and introspective power. Today, Pessoa is a touchstone for contemporary poets and thinkers, whose fascination with multiplicity and inner experience mirrors the modern soul he so hauntingly captured.

🇵🇹 VI – O maestro sacode a batuta, por Fernando Pessoa
O maestro sacode a batuta,
E lânguida e triste a música rompe...
Lembra-me a minha infância, aquele dia
O deslizar dum cão verde, e do outro lado
Todo o teatro é o meu quintal, a minha infância
Do meu quintal... E a música atira com bolas
À minha infância... E o muro do quintal é feito de gestos
De batuta e rotações confusas de cães verdes
E cavalos azuis e jockeys amarelos..,

🇬🇧 VI – The maestro waves his baton, by Fernando Pessoa
The maestro waves his baton,
And languidly and sadly the music breaks...
It reminds me of my childhood, that day
When I was playing by a wall in the backyard
Throwing a ball I had at one side
The slide of a green dog, and on the other side
A blue horse running with a yellow jockey,
The music continues, and behold, in my childhood
Suddenly between me and the conductor, a white wall,
The ball comes and goes, now a green dog,
Now a blue horse with a yellow jockey...
The whole theatre is my backyard, my childhood
It is everywhere, and the ball comes playing music,
A sad and vague music that wanders around my backyard
Dressed as a green dog becoming a yellow jockey...
(So fast the ball spins between me and the musicians...)
I throw it towards my childhood and it
Crosses the whole theatre that lies at my feet
Playing with a yellow jockey and a green dog
And a blue horse that appears over the wall
Of my backyard... And the music throws balls
At my childhood... And the backyard wall is made of gestures
Of batons and confusing rotations of green dogs
And blue horses and yellow jockeys...
The whole theatre is a white wall of music
Where a green dog runs after my longing
For my childhood, blue horse with a yellow jockey...
And from one side to the other, from right to left,
Where there are trees and among the branches at the foot of the canopy
With orchestras playing music,
Where there are rows of balls in the shop where I bought it
And the shopkeeper smiles among the memories of my childhood...
And the music stops like a wall collapsing,
The ball rolls down the precipice of my interrupted dreams,
And from atop a blue horse, the conductor, yellow jockey turning black,
Gives thanks, resting his baton atop the escape of a wall,
And bows smiling, with a white ball atop his head,
White ball that disappears down his back. ..

E cavalli blu e fantini gialli...
