Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) stands as one of the most enigmatic and influential poets of the 20th century. A Portuguese literary giant, Pessoa is best known for his creation of heteronyms—fully developed alter egos with distinct biographies, philosophies, and poetic voices. Among them, Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Álvaro de Campos each embody different worldviews, allowing Pessoa to explore multiple facets of modern existence and poetic expression. This radical fragmentation of identity was not a stylistic trick but a profound philosophical and literary choice that anticipated postmodern explorations of the self. Pessoa’s poetry ranges from the mystical to the existential, from classical restraint to ecstatic modernism.

His work, largely unpublished during his lifetime, has since gained worldwide acclaim for its depth, innovation, and introspective power. Today, Pessoa is a touchstone for contemporary poets and thinkers, whose fascination with multiplicity and inner experience mirrors the modern soul he so hauntingly captured.

E, misturado, o pó das duas realidades cai

🇬🇧 V – Outside, there is a whirlwind of sunshine, by Fernando Pessoa
Outside, there is a whirlwind of sunshine, the horses on the carousel...
Trees, stones, hills, dance motionless inside me...
Absolute night at the illuminated fair, moonlight on a sunny day outside,
And all the lights of the fair make noise on the walls of the yard...
Groups of girls with jugs on their heads
Passing by outside, full of being under the sun,
They cross paths with large, sticky groups of people walking around the fair,
People all mixed up with the lights of the stalls, the night and the moonlight,
And the two groups meet and merge
Until they form one that is both...
The fair and the lights of the fair and the people walking around the fair,
And the night that takes the fair and lifts it into the air,
They walk above the treetops full of sunshine,
They walk visibly beneath the rocks that shine in the sun,
They appear on the other side of the jugs that the girls carry on their heads,
And this whole spring landscape is the moon over the fair,
And the whole fair with its noises and lights is the ground of this sunny day...
Suddenly someone shakes this double hour as if in a sieve
And, mixed together, the dust of the two realities falls
On my hands full of drawings of ports
With large ships that leave and have no intention of returning...
White and black gold dust on my fingers...
My hands are the footsteps of that girl who leaves the fair,
Alone and happy like today...

Alberi, pietre, colline, danzano immobili dentro di me...
Polvere d'oro bianca e nera sulle mie dita...
