Fernando Pessoa (1888–1935) stands as one of the most enigmatic and influential poets of the 20th century. A Portuguese literary giant, Pessoa is best known for his creation of heteronyms—fully developed alter egos with distinct biographies, philosophies, and poetic voices. Among them, Alberto Caeiro, Ricardo Reis, and Álvaro de Campos each embody different worldviews, allowing Pessoa to explore multiple facets of modern existence and poetic expression. This radical fragmentation of identity was not a stylistic trick but a profound philosophical and literary choice that anticipated postmodern explorations of the self. Pessoa’s poetry ranges from the mystical to the existential, from classical restraint to ecstatic modernism.

His work, largely unpublished during his lifetime, has since gained worldwide acclaim for its depth, innovation, and introspective power. Today, Pessoa is a touchstone for contemporary poets and thinkers, whose fascination with multiplicity and inner experience mirrors the modern soul he so hauntingly captured.

🇬🇧 IV – What tambourines the silence of this room! by Fernando Pessoa
What tambourines the silence of this room!...
The walls are in Andalusia...
There are sensual dances in the fixed glow of the light...
Suddenly, the whole space stops...
It stops, slips, unwraps itself...
And in a corner of the ceiling, much further away than it is,
White hands open secret windows
And there are branches of violets falling
From a spring night outside
Over my closed eyes...
